TUS and Greyhound Racing Ireland Launch Applications for Level 6 Certificate in Greyhound Health, Injuries & Drug Analysis

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), in partnership with Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI), has announced that applications are now open for the second phase of its innovative greyhound education initiative with the launch of the Special Purpose Award (Level 6) Certificate in Greyhound Health, Injuries & Drug Analysis.

The accredited programme forms part of a wider collaboration between TUS and GRI aimed at advancing education, professional standards and animal welfare across Ireland's greyhound industry. The course is part-funded by Greyhound Racing Ireland, making it more accessible to owners, trainers and industry participants seeking to enhance their knowledge and professional qualifications.

Designed collaboratively by TUS academic experts and GRI industry specialists, the programme focuses on the identification, prevention and treatment of greyhound injuries, alongside the correct use of medications and a comprehensive understanding of drug control and analysis. Participants will study anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and laboratory testing procedures, gaining both scientific knowledge and practical skills through a blended delivery model that includes online learning, laboratory sessions and practical on-site demonstrations.

The programme follows the successful launch of the Special Purpose Award in Greyhound Welfare and Husbandry earlier this year and represents the second phase of a landmark educational partnership between the two organisations.

Pat Meskell, Veterinary Director with Greyhound Racing Ireland, welcomed the opening of applications, saying, "The launch of applications for this Level 6 programme marks another important step forward in supporting excellence in greyhound welfare and veterinary care. This course will provide participants with a strong scientific understanding of injury prevention, treatment protocols and medication controls, while also enhancing awareness of the regulatory frameworks that underpin integrity in our sport. By investing in education and professional development, we are continuing to raise standards across the industry and ensuring the highest levels of welfare for our greyhounds."

The Special Purpose Award in Greyhound Health, Injuries & Drug Analysis offers a unique opportunity for participants to develop specialist expertise in an area of growing importance to the industry, while earning a recognised Level 6 qualification.
