Ian Fortune
Pomba Angie completed her unbeaten march through the Bosco Gleeson Memorial at Newbridge on Friday night, showing another side to her armoury as she came from third to pick off the early leader Meleys and the always close Jaytee Dallas.
Pomba Angie was understandably sent off a warm favourite but some would have been surprised that she was available at odds against with Matthew Derrick’s daughter of Ballymac Cooper and Distant Aoife sent to traps an even money chance.
Meleys made her best start of the competition from five to turn in front but she was always under pressure with Jaytee Dallas and Pomba Angie turning second and third.
Ultimately, Pomba Angie was too strong. The David Flanagan trained youngster continued her rise to potential stardom, finishing fast to come through for a three-length victory in 28.69. Jaytee Dallas got the better of Meleys to take second with the latter a half length away in third.
Pomba Angie will now step up in grade but she looks more than capable of going onto bigger things. It will be interesting to see where she turns up next.
SADIE TOO STRONG
Earlier on the card, Sunfire Sadie emerged a good winner of the Book Your Christmas Party Night A6/A7 decider.
Sassy Sammy led early only to be challenged around the last two bends by Cross Bono but the fast-finishing Sunfire Sadie caught them napping, coming through to win by two lengths for owner Hugh Deery in 29.30.
